BUSIA MEDICS WARN AGAINST MISUSE OF PROBETA N MEDICINE
Busia medics have raised concern over the misuse of Probeta N medicine in the treatment of infections of the eye.
The Director Medical Services, Dr Janerose Ambuchi said despite the drug being known in the pharmaceutical world for treating eye problems, it is being abused.
“It is like a magic drug that some people are abusing not knowing that one can become blind,” said Dr Ambuchi, during a stakeholders consultative meeting to improve eye care services in the County.
She urged locals to stop treating themselves with over the counter medicine, stressing the importance of seeking medical attention from qualified health personnel.
She continued: “Some of the blindness that people are getting in the County is because they expose themselves to danger due to misuse of chemicals they put in their eyes. Probeta N should be banned,”
She further said that those selling drugs in chemists should ensure they adhere to the regulations by selling to those who have prescriptions in a bid to help curb the effects of the medicine.
Ambuchi revealed that the County Government in collaboration with Fred Hollows Foundation has strived to ensure that locals get eye care services across the County through the established satellite eye clinics.
“We are boasting of having fully functional satellite eye clinics in the County. Let people take advantage of the facilities to get treatment from qualified health workers,” emphasized the Director.
The County Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Deputy Director Isaiah Omondi challenged school head teachers and principals to ensure that they liaise with the department of health and Sanitation when recruiting nurses for purposes of having those who are qualified for the job.
The County Health Promotion Officer Nelson Andanje and the Nutrition Coordinator Scholastic Nabade encouraged residents to take advantage of the Busia County Emergency Operation Centre toll free line 0800721009 and email account: manager@busiaeoc.or.ke to raise issues of concern for purposes of getting assistance.
The Fred Hollows Foundation project Officer Cecilia Kangara said they will continue working closely with the County Government of Busia for purposes of ensuring locals get eye care services.
Others present included partners among them Living Goods, Dumisha Afya, Nutrition International, PMI Impact Malaria, Community Empowerment and Development Centre, Amref PSK and the Ministry of Education.
