The youths in the country have been called upon to engage actively in agricultural activities in order to complement the growing demand for raw materials.

Speaking during a maiden visit to Rivatex East Africa, the government spokesperson Col. Rtd Cyrus Oguna said there is a need to encourage women and youth in order to focus on active farming instead of focusing on employment.

“Youths form a big percent of the country’s population but most of them are unemployed, jobs are available through farming especially cotton where the market is guaranteed and they will be empowered,” said Oguna.

The spokesperson was categorical that the youths are in a good position to generate cotton through increased acreage which is an important raw material to most textile industries.

“There is an opportunity for everyone who wants to venture into cotton farming. We have enough land in the country and we need to ensure that have a consistent supply of raw materials for our industries. Rivatex is a model enterprise of the government and we are proud of the steps taken to revive the facility,” he added.

Currently, Rivatex is engaging farmers spread in 22 counties for the growing of cotton and has been supporting them through the provision of seeds and pesticides as an incentive.
