National Ball Games for Special Need Students kicks off in Uasin Gishu County
Uasin Gishu governor Jonathan Bii flagged off 1,020 students with special needs from both primary and secondary schools who will be participating in the 19th edition special school games.
The sports are being held in Hill School Primary and Moi Girls High School respectively.
“The objective of the events is to sensitize the public that disability is not inability, all learners can excel given the opportunity. I wish them all the best as they engage in the games. County Commissioner Dr Eddyson Nyale and his security team assured us of enough security during the four-day games,” he said after flagging off.
Uasin Gishu County Director of Education Muriuki Harrison said the games will involve eight regions and each region with a representation of each special needs category from visually handicapped, mentally handicapped, and autism.
“Today we started off special games which were flagged by our governor. They matched through the town sensitizing people up to hill school where we had the opening ceremony,” he added
“We have about eight regions and each region is presenting a team from all special needs categories from a visual handicap, mentally handicap, physically handicap, and autism.” Explained Mr. Muriuki adding that two fields will be in use as visually and physically handicapped having their games in Moi GirlsEldoret while the other special categories will be hosted at Hill School Eldoret.
The games will include football, netball, handball, and volleyball, and various donations made by stakeholders for the competitions. Plenty of rewards including trophies and certificates to that whowill emerge victorious
“We had some good well-wishers who donated water and sodas to the students like Mediheal and St Luke’s hospitals who are supporting us to see this through. We expect these games to be very entertaining for we have sensitized the residents of Uasin Gishu and we know that they’ll come and be able to support the young boys and girls,” he noted.
