Elgeyo Marakwet County Government Partners With Ampath Kenya
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich held discussions with a delegation from the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (Ampath Kenya) on a raft of plans on how to improve health care in the County.
Led by its Chief of Party, Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo and Dr. Jeremiah Laktabai, Co-lead, Ampath Population Health Initiative, Ampath is going to hire medical staff and equip stock with drugs at Labot and Simit dispensaries in Lelan and Soy North respecively Wards by the end of the year.
The team is also going to open a model pharmacy at Iten County Referral Hospital (ICRH) in a weeks’ time.
Ampath and the county government, through medical camps will conduct community screening and treating patients in the grass roots, which according to Governor Rotich, fits well in his Afya Bora health plan.
The program also targets to support human resource in the health sector.
“I would like to appreciate the support from Ampath Kenya. Through the Afya Bora program in my manifesto, the model of community screening is key.This will ensure that screening is conducted at grassroot level,” he said, “key role is to tackle all diseases from the community level before it develops into various stages which are costly to treat.”
Prof Kimaiyo lauded the Governor for his efforts to improve and better health services in the County saying the efforts will reduce the cost of seeking health services. “We have seen your efforts in trying to ensure that the health facilities in Elgeyo Marakwet is stocked with drugs. This is encouraging. That is why we have come in to supplement by taking up the two health facilities and having a model pharmacy at Iten County Referral Hospital,” said Prof Kimaiyo.
Dr Laktabai said by focusing on primary care, the county will have reduced cost of medical care for the people.
“We should focus on preventive measures by empowering the Community Health Volunteers. We will work with the County to ensure that more screening is done at the village level,” he said.
Present was Health Services Chief Officer Mrs Mary Kipchumba and Director Isaac Kipyego among other staff from health department.
