Cheptil hit Stahiza to win EA Boys’ volleyball crown

Cheptil’s heroics came hot on the heels of Kwanthanze’s triumph in Thursday’s girls’ final.

Cheptil Boys Friday completed a Kenyan clean sweep of schools volleyball titles at the final day of the East African School Games in Arusha, Tanzania after they defeated holders Stahizza of Uganda 3-1 sets in the final.

The Kenyan representatives came from a set down (25-21) to turn the tables on the immediate champions claiming the subsequent sets in 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23 to reclaim the regional title they last won in 2012 in Bujumbura, Burundi.

Kwanthanze extended their dominance in schools volleyball after they defeated Kesogon Mixed Secondary School in straight sets in an-all Kenyan final to clinch their fourth successive regional title and sixth in total.

Meanwhile, Wiyeta came up short of their intentions to reclaim their 2017 girls’ football title after they fell 2-1 to St. Noa of Uganda in the final.

The five-time regional champions had defeated the same opponent 3-1 in their opening match of Pool ‘A’.

By the time of going to press, Debutants Highway of Nairobi were lining up against Uganda’s Kibuli Secondary School in the boys’ football final.

The team, under former Harambee Starlets Team Manager, Beldine Odemba, Thursday became the first Kenyan side to reach the final since 2016 when Barding High School won the title last for Kenya after beating Kitende 1-0 in the final at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

They ripped off the form book to qualify for the boys’ football final defeating reigning and 13-time record winners St Mary’s Kitende School of Uganda 1-0 in the semi-final.

Winners at this year’s games will represent the Federation of East Africa Secondary School Sports Federation (FEASSSA) in next year’s International School Sport Federation (ISF) World School Football Championship to be held in Morocco.
