Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua rejected the call to lower fertiliser price to Ksh.1500

DP Gachagua said it would be difficult for the drastic reduction to take place because of the economic situation in the country.
The DP said there is no way the price can go that low, and that he did not want to give Kenyans false hope.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has rejected a call from Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago to lower to lower the price of fertiliser from KSh.3500 to KSh.1500.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service on Sunday in Uasin Gishu, Gachagua told Mandago that it would be difficult for the drastic reduction to take place because of the economic situation in the country.

The DP said there is no way the price can go that low, and that he did not want to give Kenyans false hope.

“We have already reduced fertilizer price from Ksh. 6500 upto Ksh.3500 there are plans to have enough fertilizer in January because of the long rains. Senator (Mandago) let me tell you the truth, Ksh.1500 won’t be possible. Let us be honest, no need to impress people then later they see us as liars,” he said.

“The much we can do, and because the economy is bad, is lower to KSh2500 from the current KSh3500 so that we can help our people,” DP Gachagua added.

Mandago had also called on President Ruto’s administration to distribute the subsidised fertiliser through governors, accusing the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) of laxity and lack of transparency.

“Please Deputy President, bring the fertiliser to the county and let the governor distribute it to the farmers. NCPB is messing the farmers big time and cannot be trusted,” Mandago said.

Gachagua responded saying they will look into it and make sure every farmer gets the fertiliser ahead of the planting season.

Ruto’s government has distributed the subsidised fertiliser to farmers as one of the promises he made during the campaign period.
