DCI and GSU Volleyball Team Win Nyerere Cup
For the fourth time in a row, the DCI women’s volleyball team successfully defended its Nyerere Cup Champions title in the annual tournament held in Arusha last week.
This was after a spectacular show down against the towering Administration Police of Rwanda (APR) team in the Friday 14 finals, where the DCI Queens whitewashed their opponents in three sets of 26-24, 25-19 and 25-15 respectively.
In the breathtaking encounter, the to-be most valuable player (MVP) award winner Marion Indeche slammed hefty spikes on the opponents’ court, giving them no chance for a comeback. Each prolific set by the zestful team captain Jane Mumbua guaranteed a plus on the scoreboard, earning her the Best Setter award.
Had Sarah Namisi missed the Best Attacker award, the spectators, organizers and indeed the opponents themselves could have taken to the streets in protest.
Every ball she met in the skies landed on the receivers’ coart like a rocket propelled projectile, mercilessly destroying the APRs defense. Woe unto the few who clashed with the hail of her slams!
Other awards in favour of the DCI team went to Mercy Iminza aka ‘moja kabla ya nne’ (to mean jersey no.14) who was crowned the Best Blocker, Peninah Nafula – Best Libero and Daniel Bor who emerged the Best Coach in the tournament.
Best Server and Best Receiver awards went to APR’s Valentine Munezero and Seraphine M respectively.
In the preliminary stages, the DCI Queens who are also the youngest players in the Kenya National Women’s Volleyball League faced other giant teams across Eastern Africa, including Kenya’s Young Spikers, Tanzania’s Jeshi team, Star Girls, Chui and the dreaded Magereza Stars with whom they battled in the semis.
In men’s category, the General Service Unit (GSU) team pointed clearly to the Rwandan APRs who the real men were, by lashing them three sets to one in the finals thus retaining their title.
With great admiration, we congratulate the two Kenyan teams for a job well done in bringing glory to our country, and wish them greater wins in future.
