Business Community Applaud President Ruto for Disbanding Special Service Unit
A section of the Business community in Uasin Gishu county has applauded President William Ruto’s move of disbanding the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Special Service Unit (SSU) unit.
The move follows a directive from the acting Inspector General of Police Noor Gabow under the instructions of president William Ruto.
The move comes as the National Police Service prepares for reorganization under the new administration led by President William Ruto.
The Business community claims that they were harassed by rogue officers within the Special Service Unit, who engaged in soliciting of bribes.
“I lost thousands to officers in the SSU unit while on my way from Mombasa where I had gone to Purchase a vehicle, I reported the matter to Muthaiga police station and nothing was done, It was not the first time I fell into their hands, “said Sammy Yego a businessman and a farmer in Uasingishu.
Gideon Yego another businessman says the officers demanded over Ksh 100,000 which he withdrew from various bank accounts while in Nairobi upon being arrested by rogue officers in the said unit, We thank the President for disbanding it”
Kimutai Kirui a Human Rights Activist with the Centre Against Torture has appealed to the President to direct the formation of an inquiry into the atrocities committed by rogue officers within the disbanded Special Service Unit.
“We welcome the president’s move to disband the SSU this only means many Kenyans have been suffering at the hands of the said Unit that was formed to help in the fight against serious crimes, only that they resulted in using government resources to harass Kenyans and to some extent steal from them forcefully, an example of the business people and farmers within Uasin Gishu,” said Kimutai.
The President has promised to overhaul the management of security in the Country.
