Roselinda Soipan Becomes the First Maasai Woman CS

Roselinda Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary appointee for Environment and Forestry is the first woman from the Maasai community to be appointed to Cabinet.

Soipan has promised to carry forth Minister Michuki`s initiatives of protecting riparian land as well as cleaning of the Rivers beginning with The Nairobi river.

“Am grateful to have been granted this opportunity as the first female Maasai nominated to the cabinet in Kenya. I know the responsibilities that lie on my shoulder as the cabinet secretary for Environment and forestry and I look forward to serving the great people of Kenya,” said Soipan.

While responding to the question on carbon emissions, Soipan said, by 2030 the country hopes to cut down on the emissions by at least by 32 %.

“My first assignment in the office is to attend the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties [ COP27] that will be held in Egypt to find effective means to tackle the global challenge of climate change. This is a global challenge and it calls for a collaborative effort,” she said.

Soipan further said there is a need to increase trees and forest cover in the country with current forest cover approximated to be about 7% amid concerted efforts of conservation by various stakeholders.

“We will recruit young people in greening our country. Kenya Forest Research Institutes will need to research more so that we curb the rising effects of climate change. it is also the responsibility of the community to work with Kenya Forest Service and liaise on growing short-term crops so as to meet the demand for food production in the country. Mau forest among other known forests in Kenya will be fenced so as to curb forests encroachment,” added Soipan.

Soipan’s net worth is sh. 156 million inclusive of her assets and businesses.
