The inaugural Siaya county women football league promotion playoffs will be played on Saturday at Gombe primary school.

Alego Usonga’s Siaya queens will face Gem zone’s Wagai starlets as Ugunja’s Nyasanda starlets take on South Gem.

The inaugural league was played in four zones before top two winners of each zone progressed to quarter finals. Siaya Queens knocked out Uhola Queens as South Gem beat Smart ladies Yieke. Nyasanda starlets and Wagai starlets progressed after earning walkovers from Siaya starlets and Rising stars respectively.

The league which attracted a total of 15 teams across the county saw setting up of a platform for young talented girls.

Siaya queens head coach John Ohanga has expressed optimism of clinching the maiden title as finals staged in home zone.

“We are inviting our fans to come in large numbers and support the team as we hope not to disappoint them,” he said.

Ohanga decried poor organization of the league as it has taken eight months to play eight league matches.

“The league started in February, it has taken too long and I appeal to organizers to do better in subsequent seasons,” he added.

The Siaya Queens coach also expressed disappointment further to the football Kenya federation Siaya branch for taking too long to release fixtures for matches as this took toll on his team’s preparation.

“Playoff fixtures were sent to us at 14.00 Hrs on Friday, less than 24 hour before kickoff giving us limited time to strategize against our opponents” he said.

FKF Siaya branch women representative Dorothy Adur said that the first season has experienced lots of challenges that were learning points for better women league development in the future .

“We started off with lots of challenges from limited financial capacities by clubs to low capacity by some teams and we still managed to sail through,” she said.

Adur has called on corporate world and stakeholders to support women teams and help young talented girls achieve their dreams.

“Siaya County has lots of talented ladies across the ages that are lacking support from the platform they are now having,” she said.
Top two teams from the playoffs will progress to Nyanza regional women league to kick off early next year.
