DCI Expresses Right of Reply Over A Baseless Article Published By Daily Nation Media Group
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations takes great exception to a shocking story published by the Daily Nation on their online edition titled “I was chained inside DCI headquarters for a year without trial.”
The outrageous story alleges how a man was kidnapped and brought to DCI headquarters where he was allegedly held at ‘DCI remand cells’ from August 1, 2021, to September 11, 2022 when he was supposedly released after being treated inhumanely.
We wish to state for the record that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations does not run a remand facility at its headquarters or at any other facility operated by the DCI or the Police. Remand facilities are run and managed by the State Department for Correctional Services.
The author of the story also alleges to have sought a clarification from an unnamed contact yet it is clear from the story that she did not bother to counter check known facts on how suspects are processed or seek a clarification from the Directorate’s Corporate Communications & Public Affairs Unit.
The Directorate is also not aware of any such person arrested by our detectives and therefore the story published by the Nation is not only inaccurate but preposterous.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations maintains an open door policy and a clarification on allegations of such magnitude should have been sought before going to press.
DCI calls upon the Nation Media group to promote ethical standards of Journalism and professionalism and discourage publishing of such unsubstantiated stories in the future.
Equally, we call upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority where the matter is alleged to have been reported to expedite their investigations over the allegations.
