16 pupils benefit from the Wings to Fly scholarship
16 pupils from Uasin Gishu have benefited from the Equity Bank wings to fly scholarship.
Speaking during the flagging off ceremony of the beneficiaries Uasin Gishu Director of Education Muriuki Harisson said they received applications from over 750 applicants.
“The selection process was so vigorous because we were looking for needy students who have achieved a minimum of 350 marks and come from a needy background. The beneficiaries are orphans and their situation is pathetic,” said Uasin Gishu director of Education.
He noted the selection board was very instrumental because they managed to seek interviews, home-to-home interviews to verify the beneficiaries.
“The wings to fly scholars were selected through a transparent and rigorous community-based verification and monitoring process, that saw members of the community who serve on the Community Scholarship Selection Boards (CSSBs) across the country invest their time to review and scrutinize applications, carry out face to face interviews and home visits before awarding the scholarships to the most deserving scholars,” said Muriuki.
Harisson said the government has rolled out Elimu scholarship where they are currently receiving applications until Monday.
“This program is targeting students who are bright but from poor backgrounds who got 280 marks and above. We have started receiving applications and the dateline will be on Monday. I urge parents whose children meet the said threshold to apply,” he added.
Stating the impacts of the Wings to Fly program, Stanley Ng’ang’a Equity Rift Valley General Manager says he is proud of the steps the program has made since its inception 13 years ago with the number of applications increasing on a yearly basis.
“As the chairman of the selection board, I wish to report each year, we have witnessed a continued increase in the number of students sending their applications for consideration to be part of this successful program. I am glad to note that the wings to fly program has had a tremendous impact on the lives of our people in this country since it was launched 13 years ago and with 1000 students set to be sponsored this year, the total number of scholars who have benefitted from EGF’s comprehensive secondary school scholarship programs is at 48, 009 students.” Noted Stanley Ng’ang’a.
The wings to fly scholarship ensures the scholars are well-rounded individuals by going beyond paying full tuition fees for four years to include a comprehensive mentorship program, a back-to-school hamper, psychosocial support, and medical care while in school.
