Government To Reintroduce Cooperatives Bill
The National government has agreed to re-introduce the cooperative bill which had been presented in the last parliament but never sailed through.
In a meeting with the council of Governors in Mombasa, cooperatives and micro, small and medium enterprise cabinet secretary Simon Chelugui committed to reintroduce the bill to the applause of Governors.
Speaking during the function, Governor Kenneth Lusaka who is also the chair of the agriculture committee in the COG lauded the move saying the cooperative movement has a huge potential in creating jobs and driving the necessary growth for citizens.
Lusaka said Kenya enjoys a robust, vibrant, and dynamic cooperative movement which is the strongest in Africa with the sector being a key player in the economy, controlling about 43% of Kenya’s gross domestic product (GDP) noting that Cooperative Societies in Kenya employ more than 300,000 people, over and above providing opportunities for self-employment to many more.
He however noted that some of the challenges being experienced in this sector are as a result of outdated laws and practices which need to be changed.
“There is a need to review the SACCO Societies Act in its entirety to ensure it is aligned to the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and recognizes the role of County Governments, “He said.
