Bio Food Products to Improve Dairy Farming in Elgeyo Marakwet
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich held talks with a team from Bio Food Products led by it’s Executive Chairman Joachim Westerveld.
The two discussed on how to improve the dairy sector in the County.
Bio Foods deals in production of high-quality fresh milk, yoghurt, and other dairy and food products.
The discussion centred around local solutions in the County dairy sector with the company announcing their willingness to buy milk from local farmers at competitive prices while offering them extension support.
“The high cost of feeds has pushed several farmers in the dairy sector out of production and this is one area Bio Foods will focus to help our farmers access affordable livestock feed so as bring them to profitability,” said Mr Westerveld.
The Governor welcomed the Company to operate in the County saying his administration was keen on linking local dairy farmers to milk processors.
“This is in line with my PESA MFUKONI program which seeks to increase household earnings through cash crop and dairy farming among other lines of production,” he said.
The team will be visiting dairy farmers and dairy cooperatives across the county where farmers will be trained on how to best formulate dairy feed at an affordable cost.
“I have also learnt a lot from Bio Foods. One key lesson is that it doesn’t matter the number of cows one has for good milk but the quality of feed, availability of water, consistency in feeding and the cows comfort,” added the County Chief.
He further thanked the Company for supporting the Iten International Marathon held late last year.
Present during the function was Agriculture and Livestock senior staff led by their CEC Edwin Seroney.
