We are Saddened by the Eviction of 105 Families in Kiriko- DP Gachagua
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says they are saddened by the impunity and total disregard of human values in the eviction of 105 families in Kiriko, Nakuru County, last week.
Gachagua said that It is depressing that police officers and other National Government officers at the county level employed by Kenyans used State resources to supervise demolition of homes.
The exercise left up to 500 people, including the elderly and children, in the cold, with no food, no water- practically nothing.
“President William Samoei Ruto and I are extremely embarrassed that resources of taxpayers were used to humiliate them. We profusely apologise to the people of Kiriko, over the forceful evictions and assure Kenyans that this will not happen again anywhere else in this country,”said the deputy president.
Gachagua noted that President Ruto’s administration cannot take this indignity and violation of human rights of the people lightly.
“While we respect the courts and rule of law, we will not allow inhumanity to thrive. We will ensure court orders are implemented with a human face,” he added.
He said in the Kiriko case, they have instructed Attorney General Justin Muturi to study the file and advise on the best way forward.
“We must address and settle this matter, which has been in court for more than 30 years. We will not allow police officers to cause chaos since their work is to protect lives and property of Kenyans. We caution rogue officers to either shape up or ship out. It will not be business as usual,” Gachagua warned.
He said disciplinary action has been taken against Government officials who oversaw this eviction.
“As an immediate measure, we distributed food and non-food items to help the affected start off again,” he said.
