Church and Mosque Razed Down in Kibra
A church and a mosque were set ablaze in Kibra, Nairobi on Monday night after anti-governmental protests led by opposition leader Raila Odinga.
A mosque in Kibra ( Lindi area) was set on fire a few hours after Raila Odinga had left the Kibra constituency.
“ Alaska mosque was set on fire. It all started in the morning and it got worse when the church and mosque were razed down,” cried a local.
“ What happened is very wrong, religious sites must be left out on this,” said one local.
Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja said fire engines managed to put out the fire before it could spread further.
“Trucks have managed to get to the scene and the fire has been contained from spreading further to households,” said governor Sakaja.
There were no immediate reports or casualties reported from the incident.
Residents accused police of watching as their property got destroyed by goons.
Monday’s demonstrations were characterized by chaos and destruction of properties particularly in Kisumu where at least one person was shot dead during a crash that ensued between locals and the police.
Kilimani police boss Muturi Mbogo said no fatalities were reported in the chaos and that the police were investigating the incidents.
“Property of unknown value was destroyed in the incidents. We have started investigations to unearth all those who were involved in the matter,” said Mbogo.
