Uasin Gishu County government has disbursed Ksh119.5 million cheques that will go towards supporting 18,071 needy students from across the county.

Speaking during the event held at the County headquarters, Bii said the beneficiaries are students in secondary schools, technical institutions, colleges, and universities.

The Governor said the bursaries will go a long way in easing the financial burden on students as the funds will pay for their tuition fees.

Bii disclosed that he had already allocated Ksh15.7 million in the supplementary budget that he hopes will cushion and support more needy students who missed out on the program due to the high number of applicants.

He also noted that plans are in place for the roll-out of the school feeding program in Early Childhood Development centers across the county.

Tabitha Chepkemoi, one of the beneficiaries from Ng’enyilel Vocational Training Center said she has been able to complete a course in plumbing and hairdressing which has made her self-reliant. She added that the bursary money had enabled her to come out of abject poverty.

Governor Bii further urged youths to join technical institutions saying tthis will help them gain technical skills which will help
them get self-employment.

“I want to humbly urge youths and form four leavers to swallow their pride and join technical
institutions since it provides youth with applicable knowledge and skills suitable for the present
age job market. The only remedy to the joblessness the youths are facing is technical institutions therefore lets refrain from the norm that technical institutions are meant for failures by joining enrolling there and you won’t regret,” said Uasin Gishu governor.

He said every student studying in VTCs gets Kshs 15,000 from the County Government and is
required to pay Kshs 10,000 only in every year of study.
