Police in India’s Chhattisgarh state are investigating an incident in which a newlywed man and his brother were killed when a home theater they received as a gift exploded.
According to reports, the music system was allegedly given to the couple by the bride’s ex-lover, who was apparently furious that his former flame was getting married.

Hemendra Merawi died on Monday in his Kabirdham district home as soon as he turned on the music system. His elder brother, Rajkumar, died as a result of his injuries.

Four other family members, including an 18-month-old child, were injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The blast was so powerful that it reportedly brought down the house’s roof and walls.

Shortly after the incident, the suspect, Sarju Markam, 33, was apprehended in the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh.

According to Indian newspapers, the suspect, a father of two, was in a relationship with the 29-year-old woman and desired her to be his second wife.

“Markam had initially lied to Merawi’s wife that he was not married. After she realised the truth, she refused to marry him. But he kept threatening her to marry him,” the police said in a statement.

During the wedding, the suspect is said to have placed the music system on a platform alongside other gifts.

He would later confess to the police that he has rigged the gift with explosives targetting his ex-lover and her man.

“He used ammonium nitrate, petrol and gunpowder retrieved from firecrackers. He gift-wrapped it to avoid any suspicion. The blast got triggered when the system was switched on,” the police added.
