Busia County Government Committed To Address Challenges Facing Lab Personnel

Busia Governor, Dr Paul Nyongesa Otuoma has reiterated his Government’s commitment towards addressing issues that have continued to hinder laboratory personnel from providing effective and efficient services.

H.E Otuoma said his administration has prioritized the recruitment of additional laboratory technicians to solve the issue of staff shortage witnessed in various health facilities across the County.

“I am aware of the many staff issues that affect the laboratory technicians. I have taken a proactive approach to solving some of these problems realizing that not all of them have immediate solutions. The thorny issue of staff shortage is among my first priority,” he emphasized.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Health Executive, Hon. Beatrice Nakholi at the Busia Polytechnic grounds during the International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day, the Governor encouraged them (Laboratory staff) to remain committed in their duties.

“As we pursue the issue of improved service delivery, I expect all of you to continue with your good work and provide the much needed services to the residents,” added the County Boss.

The Chief Officer Health and Sanitation, Dr Susan Outa said they are committed towards ensuring that the lab technicians are capacity built for purposes of having more quality assurance officers.

She added that: “We are moving towards making sure that our laboratories offer services round the clock and of high quality. We will also ensure that the entomology unit at the Alupe Sub County Hospital is operational to help reduce the malaria prevalence rate which stands at 39 per cent,”

The Director Medical Services, Dr Janerose Ambuchi said despite the challenges the County has accredited laboratories with high potential to conduct various tests among them Covid-19.

“Let us take advantage of the available opportunity to ensure that we maximize on what we have,” she said,
adding that there is need for the health budget to be increased.

During the event, residents got free testing services for various ailments including malaria, blood sugar, urinalysis, HIV, H-pylori for ulcers, pregnancy and Tuberculosis screening where treatment was also offered.
Residents commended the organizers including the County Government for the opportunity they gave them in ensuring they get tested as well as treatment.

“Am glad to have been tested and given drugs during the World Biomedical Laboratory Science Day celebrations,” said James Ogore, a resident of Busia town.
