Change Of Guard at GSU As New Commandant Takes Over
Mr Eliud Lagat, HSC, ss, ‘ndc’ (K), has this afternoon taken over the mantle as the new General Service Unit Commandant, following the appointment of Mr Douglas Kanja, EBS, OGW, as the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service.
Mr Lagat’s appointment was announced in a communique issued by the Chief of Staff & Head of Public Service, Mr Felix Koskei, on April 12, 2023.
The press release noted in part that the Head of State and Government had on behalf of the National Security Council noted the changes effected by the National Police Service Commission, which also included the appointment of Mr Munga Nyale, as the commandant of the Kenya Police College-Kiganjo.
Mr Lagat, who until his appointment was the Director of the Investigations Bureau, was accorded a warm reception back to his roots where he began his career as a law enforcement officer.
In an elaborate ceremony witnessed at the General Service Unit headquarters, Mr Lagat who had replaced his signature suit with the GSU fatigues received the formation’s maroon flag from Mr Kanja, amid pomp and razzmatazz.
His badges of ranks rested majestically on his shoulders, black gorget patches with a strip of silver embroidery fitting flawlessly on his collar and the much revered red beret whose guoya (wool felt) had undergone 5-days of continuous brushing as is standard practice at kikosi maalum, just to ensure not a single strand of yarn was out of place, covered his head authoritatively.
While addressing the officers gathered at GSU headquarters, the new commandant expressed his delight at being back to GSU where he had served under the much esteemed RECCE Company in his hey days.
Mr Lagat committed to work diligently while reminding the officers that they had a duty to serve their country selflessly and protect humanity. He also commended his predecessor Mr Kanja, for his tremendous performance while he was the formation’s commandant.
At the same time, Mr Kanja congratulated the new commandant and thanked the officers for executing their mandate selflessly during his tenure.
Mr Lagat is also an explosives and post blasts expert who headed the forensic Bomb disposal unit and the directorate of Reforms at DCI headquarters. He is also an alma mater of the esteemed National Defence College of Kenya.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations wishes Mr Lagat all the best as he takes up his new role as the GSU commandant.
