Rise of Gonorrhea Infections Reported in Kamukunji
Uasin Gishu County Public Health officers have warned against a spike in the spread of gonorrhea.
Addressing a public baraza at Kamukunji Estate in Soy Sub County,Kuinet/Kapsuswa ward Public health officer Hillary Ronoh said that there were increased cases of gonorrhea transmission which could be supplanted by the dreaded super gonorrhea.
“We have observed increased cases of gonorrhea within Kamukunji estate and the neighboring Estates. We are concerned that those affected should get proper medication before the strain they currently have becomes resistant,” said Ronoh.
He urged those infected to seek medical attention before the condition worsens.
“We are advising those affected to get proper medication by visiting a hospital or a health dispensary, getting drugs over the counter could lead to the strain of gonorrhea that is quite difficult to treat,” he added.
Jane Chege a Community health volunteer at Kamukunji mooted for free screening camp at Kamukunji citing increased cases of HIV and STIs.
“We urge our hospitals to have a free screening of Gonorrhea for men, women, and youths in general and for those who will not go for screening deny them sex,” she said.
The Assistant County Commissioner Soy Sub County Dennis Odhoch , noted that a spike in the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and especially gonorrhea was linked to the brewing and trade of illicit brews,
“There is a correlation between the STIs and Illicit brews, once our people consume such liquor they become irresponsible and hence engage in unprotected casual sex –we will intensify the fight against the illicit brew as well as sensitization campaigns to our people on personal hygiene,”he said.
Over ten condom dispensers will be distributed within Kamkunji so as to reduce unprotected sex.
