Governor Barasa Criticizes Senators for Shooting Down Proposed Allocation To Counties
Kakamega County Governor Fernandez Barasa has criticized Kenya Kwanza affiliated Senators for shooting down the proposed KSH 425 Billion equitable shareable allocation to Counties.
This comes after 22 Kenya Kwanza Senators on Thursday, April 20, voted against the Division of Revenue Bill amendment that would have allocated more money to county governments.
Governors had demanded Ksh 425 billion as the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) recommended. Governors will thus receive Ksh385billion as an equitable share to the counties in the 2023/24 financial year.
Speaking at Matungu Sub-County Hospital on Friday in his capacity as the Chairperson of the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee at the Council of Governors, Governor Barasa said the action amounts to denying devolved units their rightful share contrary to what is expected of the Senators – safeguarding devolution.
“I want to condemn 22 Kenya Kwanza Senators for shooting down Division of Revenue Bill amendment; this is uncalled for and ill intended. As governors we are ashamed of then for denying Kenyans for more development, “said the Kakamega
The Governor explained that due to the tough economic times currently, Ksh 407 Billion would have been the irreducible minimum terming the decision by the Legislators a huge disservice to Kenyans.
