Eldoret Evictions: County Gives Warning to Those With Rent Arrears
The County Government of Uasin Gishu County has issued a stern warning to tenants living in the County house units and have rent arrears.
According to the Chief Officer of housing and Development Julius Koech, the eviction exercise will continue until all those who have arrears have been evicted.
“The exercise started last week at the Agricultural Machinery Service (AMS), Chepkoilel, Pioneer, Mayabi, and Kodhek estates.
“The eviction will now proceed to Kilimani, Kamanda, Uhuru, Kapsoya Gardens, Kidiwa, Tom Mboya, and any other Estate with county housing units. As we are talking the County government is receiving rent of KES 200,000 instead of KES 5.4 million from the 1,095 house units,” added the Chief Officer of housing and Development.
“We are targeting to recover KES 438 million from tenants with rent arrears amounting to over KES 200,000,”
Koech added.
He urged those tenants willing to pay their areas to visit county offices and pay 50% of the amount and negotiate with the County on how the remaining amount will be cleared.
The Chief Officer noted that the profits raised from rent arrears will cater for the Medical Supply of Drugs to Health Facilities and pay contractors engaged in building health facilities, Roads, and ECDE schools.
“We have complied with the law in the eviction process because we issued notices appropriately in September 2022, December 2022, and February 2023. Our plan is to ensure all the arrears amounting to KES 438 Million are paid up because the money has been budgeted for this financial to pay for rendered services, “added the chief officer.
