Regreening program in school’s continues
Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheresek today hosted stakeholders meeting prior to the 2nd edition of regreening schools program to be held in Moiben Kuserwo Ward on 12th May with over 30,000 trees set to be grown.
Prof. Cheserek stated that the program will improve the livelihoods, acts as food security and climate resilience by restoring ecosystem services, particularly through agroforestry.
“Our mission involves the deliberate and systematic integration of trees and all critical elements for the sustainable management of land and maintenance of healthy landscapes,” she said.
Added the DG: “The partnership with other stakeholders will see us achieve Governors’ directive of planting 60 million trees in 5 years.”
She encouraged groups and individuals to get their nurseries registered with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) saying the registration will help potential buyers identify groups or individuals with tree seedlings species of their choice.
The overall impact of the program is to improve and resilience of livelihoods, healthy rangelands, biodiversity and have an improved and secured micro climate.
Other anticipated outcomes include increased land under sustainable management, improved water settlement and flow, improved policy environment and increased land under sustainable community governance.
The program will be carried out all over the county. It targets all institutions including churches, schools, hospitals and others
North Rift Regional coordinator conservative manager Anthony Musyoka applauded the county initiative and pledge support so as to achieve the target.
Upon planting a tree residents are encouraged to feed the information in the ‘Jaza Miti’ app for the purposes of record.
Prof. Cheserek and the team later on joined police officers at Iten police station in planting trees.
During the meeting, Public service Board Chairperson Dr. Sally Kimosop, UOE team, Eldowas, Kenya Water agency Towers and other technical staff were in attendance.
