Maize Farmer Counting Losses After His Maize Farm Was Sprayed With Roundup Chemicals
A young farmer in Uasin Gishu County is counting losses after his ten-acre piece of land after maize was spayed with chemicals that led to them wilting.
It is alleged that there were some differences between the person who leased him the land and a family member(brother) who wanted the land by force.
“As a farmer I did all that is necessary in maize farming until a few days ago when I was informed that the maize that was doing well had started wilting, followed by drying. I was told that someone visited the land at night and sprayed the plants with roundup chemicals leading to them drying,” said Terer.
He said he reported the matter to the area chief and the police and investigations are underway.
“I don’t know what to do since in the 10 acres piece of land 70 percent of it has been destroyed. You cannot do that even to your enemy. I approximately used Sh 500,000 for the preparation, leasing, and planting of the maize,” he added.
Fred Kemboi said investigations should be done at speed and those involved should be brought to book.
“As residents, we want all those who were involved in this heinous act to be arrested and be brought to book since this is uncalled for and ill-intended. Police should do their work without being compromised,” he said.
Kipchumba Nyumba Kumi elder says “We condemn the act with the strongest terms possible, the such act has never happened this is like treason,”
