County to Have Special Programs For Specific Youths
The County Government of Uasin Gishu is working on a program to establish and profile youth who are not in education, employment and training and to tailor unique programs for them.
The program that is being worked on by the Department of Youth, Sports and ICT is primarily an empowerment scheme that is transformative and sustainable.
Speaking during a presentation with a Uasin Gishu Youth Sector Working Group, County Executive for Youth, Sports and ICT, Eng Lucy Ng’endo, said the county government is focusing on programs that will empower the youth.
Eng Ng’endo said Governor Jonathan Bii is keen and very particular about youth empowerment and the program is part of the whole process of reducing unemployment and instead promoting economic empowerment for the young generation.
Director of Youth Affairs, Peter Ruto, said the approach touches on linkages, giving the youth affordable credits and training them on entrepreneurship.
“The empowerment program has a raft of programs that are geared at assisting our youth to earn,” said Ruto.
“We are targeting a segment o youth, for example, who have finished technical training and just need a small push-up to buy plumbing or electrical installation equipment, to start earning,” Ruto said.
The Department focuses on sports talent development, supporting art, provision of internet connectivity for access to global opportunities, sensitization to do business and environmental conservation.
The County is currently working on the establishment of a Sports, Recreation and Youth Complex in Kapseret. Youth will have areas and facilities where they can act film and other creative programs.
The Uasin Gishu County Youth Service Draft Bill 2023 is another policy that is in its advanced stages. It will provide a legal framework for, among others , apprenticeship programme. This is one of many other empowerment programs that the county government is undertaking.
