Bars Near Residential and Public Institutions Put on Notice

Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board Koiya Arap Maiyo has put on notice those entertainment joints near residential and Public Institutions.

This is after the public outcry of such joints disrupting their day-to-day activities due to their loud noises.
“I want to put on notice bars near residential areas and public institutions that they risk closure since it is against the law. Concerns about the clubs being less than 300m away from people are growing and we will intervene,” said Arap Maiyo.

He added that those bars which are not licensed should do so as they will be charged with breaking the law.

“We have issued 805 licenses so far which accounts for 80% of the people who applied for them and the remaining 20% will soon receive theirs after complying with our regulations, ” added Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board.

Maiyo said in the past month they have confiscated 9500 litres of Kangara and 1550 litres of Chang’aa since the launch of the raid.

“39 people have been arraigned in court with some facing jail terms and others paying a Ksh 1.7M fine,” said Maiyo.

Maiyo has brought to light the government’s plan to rehabilitate those addicted to drinking and even help them establish productive businesses.

“By the help of our able governor Jonathan Bii, money has been set aside to help those who will have been rehabilitated to set up jobs, this will prevent them from going back to drinking.” Arap Maiyo noted Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board Koiya Arap Maiyo has put on notice those entertainment joints near residential and Public Institutions.

“The crackdown is ongoing and anyone who will be found going against the law will face the full force of the law and his license confiscated,” he said.

The County Government leadership is undertaking the crackdown in all trading centers and residential areas in a bid to create an enabling environment safe for children as well as ensure that the licensed clubs also sell legal drinks approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS).
