World Marks Environment Day
World Environment day is celebrated every 5th of June where this year, the theme is Ecosystem Restoration under the Best plastic pollution campaign and the day is facilitated by Cote D’Ivoire and upheld by Netherlands.
“As the material slowly seeps into our oceans, soil, and forests it causes irreparable damage hence it serves as a reminder for individuals’ action regarding plastic damage,” stated the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
World environment day 2023 provides hope and opportunity for all of us to contribute to the protection of the environment and well-being of the earth at a time when extreme temperature and natural disasters constantly occur.
“World environment day is a moment for Kenya, Africa and the whole world to mobilize and commit to stronger action,” said Inger Anderson, the UNEP executive director.
This day serves as a voice for a number of environmentalists in the face of these environmental disasters, it calls attention to the ongoing negative effects of climate change and global warming.
“As a result of environmental ignorance, climate change can cause effects like loss of lives, property, biodiversity, and even resources, “stated UNEP.
According to UNEP, there are mounting risks to health and ecosystem degradation hence a Pollution, Health and Environment unit was established to address the important issues and linkages between environment and health.
Inger Anderson has further said that millions of people in Africa are already doing the right things to beat plastic pollution.
