Eldoret: Governor BII’s Administration to Ensure Illicit Brew is a Thing of the Past
Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board Koiya Arap Maiyo says he has put measures in place to ensure the use and consumption of illegal liquor in the County is a thing of the past.
“Through the leadership of our able Governor Jonathan Bii, we have a perfect steering to tame illicit brews within the county to ensure that we secure the sanity and morals of our communities,” Maiyo said while speaking to the press in his office.
He said a total of 842 bars in the County have been licensed this year, a reduction from last year to reduce the consumption and trade of alcohol in the county.
“For the past year, the board has archived a lot to reduce illicit alcohol intake. In the last six months, we have been able to root out perpetrators of illicit brews which resulted in a new start for regions that had been massively affected.” He confirmed.
Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board Koiya Arap Maiyo says the County has developed a strategy to support reformed brewers to have alternative sources of livelihood.
“We also have plans to start rehabilitation centers to help reform the consumers, sellers, and suppliers of illegal alcohol,” said Arap Maiyo.
“So far, we know of 300 individuals who have reformed from consuming and brewing illegal alcohol. We applaud our able Governor, Jonathan Bii Chelilim for setting aside some money to capitate these reformers so that they can find decent jobs to sustain themselves and their families,” said Koiya Arap Maiyo, Alcoholic Drinks Control Board Director.
He further said that governor Bii’s administration has set aside Ksh 3 million that will be used for the same.
Maiyo put on notice those involved in the sale and manufacturing of illicit brew saying those who will be found will face the full force of the law.
“I want to give a stern warning to those involved in the sale and intake of illegal liquor we will work round the clock to ensure that this vice is a thing of the past. Such illegal businesses cannot be tolerated since they aim at destroying youths’ future,” said Maiyo while speaking to the press.
