Eldoret: Long Distance Drivers Strike, This is Why
Long-distance drivers in Uasin Gishu have downed their tools protesting a proposal by NTSA to undergo a second test after three years.
According to Secretary General Midimo Truck Drivers Abdurrahman Mohamed, the order is punitive and places a heavy burden on drivers who are on low pay.
“We are here to announce the strike of truck drivers whose rights have been infringed by the government. Sadly, our licenses are taken, removed from the system, and when one goes to renew them we are told we are not in the system,” said the Secretary-General Midimo Truck Drivers.
“I want to urge our fellow drivers, let us join hands in this one for us to get a lasting solution on the same. How can a person aged 58 years go back to school” he wondered.
Yusuf Bakari notes we will not allow this to happen until NTSA reviews its new laws.
“We are ready to go on strike for even three months until we get justice from the government,” he added.
“As leaders of Eldoret truck drivers we have started our strike and all vehicle have been packed no one whatsoever will continue with his or her daily activities even if its urgent,” Omar Mohamed driver for 32 years,” added.
