The county government of Trans Nzoia has embarked on an ambitious plan to address a water shortage in parts of the county through the drilling of water boreholes in areas that are not connected to piped water.

The county’s executive committee member in charge of environment, water and natural resources Mr Patrick Gacheru said a cabinet resolution under the guidance of HE George Natembeya resolved to drill the boreholes as a part of the solution.

“We resolved to drill boreholes as a quick measure after Governor Natembeya received a lot of complaints from residents from various parts who have no access to piped water. We have drilled 15 boreholes so far,” said Mr Gacheru.

The CEC who spoke on the sidelines of an exercise to drill water at Usafi estate in Tuwan ward noted that the county is faced with low water connectivity despite it being within the Cherang’any and Mt. Elgon water towers.

“The Kapolet water project which was meant to boost the supply of water in Kitale town has not been efficient since 40% of it was diverted by residents along the line for their consumption hence affecting the target,” he said.

The CEC further stated that the Nzoia Water and Services Company (NZOWASCO)’s archaic water lines are inefficient in supplying water to the overhead water reservoir located on the outskirts of Kitale town.

The CEC also stated that his department has increased its efforts to keep Kitale clean by acquiring 7 more skip bins in addition to the ones that were previously accessible, making it easier to dispose of collected waste.

“We also acquired garbage collection gadgets and protective gear for our personnel who have been facing challenges in discharging their duties. We will improve the cleanliness of our major towns,” said the CEC.

The Chief Officer Water Dorothy Musikoyo, area MCA Tuwani Francis Obingo Were among others were also present.
