Re-crafting TVET Curriculum To Skill-set And Competence Based
The Government through the State Department of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) is keen to realign the training curriculum and upscaling it to embody a skills set and competency based.
The Honorable Principal Secretary in the State Department Dr. Esther Muoria, who graced a KEPSA dialogue in the sidelines of the World Skills Day at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa noted:
“We have rolled out Recognition of prior learning (RPL) through the State Department of TVET, RPL will enable assessment and certification of youths with competency in different skills and enable them to be eligible for employment and also access government procurement opportunities.
As we celebrate the world skills day, it is good to note that a skill is fundamental to career progression.
The State Department of TVET is fully committed to ensure that our Kenyan youths are well skilled so that they can be able to compete locally, regionally and globally.
The department’s commitment is evident through the various measures put in place by the department like carrying out a rigorous curricula review to ensure that students are trained 50 percent in theory and fifty percent Industry.
This will lead to improved employability, reduce skills mismatch and enhance productivity.
Competency based skilling (CBS) is key. Because we must start skilling, we must think skilling, this is the only way we are going to make that pertinent difference for our youth.
This must be the Damascus moment for us where we take a 180⁰ turn and empower youths with the skills which are going to help them to be problem solvers.
We are re-crafting the entire TVET curricula into skills set, into what the young people can do. To make them competent.
In re-crafting the curriculum, the word attachment/ internship must not be anywhere. We must start talking about industry training because that’s the way we will find ourselves a path to go there.”
From our desk at Mount Kenya Times we take this opportunity to wish the Hon PS Dr. Esther Muoria God’s blessings as she spearheads and champions the Damascus moment to enskill our youths.
