Care for patients First, Governor Natembeya tells Health workers as He warns Drug thieves
Trans Nzoia Governor, George Natembeya, has urged health workers to prioritize and demonstrate strong work ethics in their roles.
He expressed concern that some health workers were overly focused on seeking promotions to higher positions, neglecting their primary duty of caring for and treating patients.
Governor Natembeya made these remarks while addressing an audience in Kwanza during the county breaking ceremony for construction of Kwanza Primary Hospital Maternity unit.
This project, costing sh.32 million, is a collaborative effort between Safaricom and the Trans Nzoia county government.
The governor stressed that health department directors and their assistants should not only concentrate on administrative tasks but also actively engage in patient care at health centres to improve service delivery.
“Even if you’re promoted to a management position, you shouldn’t abandon your core duty. Service delivery remains paramount,” Governor Natembeya emphasized.
He also shared concerning statistics, revealing that out of 100,000 deliveries in Kwanza Sub-county, 287 women and children lose their lives during childbirth.
He expressed disappointment that only 29% of deliveries in Kwanza were attended by skilled professionals, whereas the overall county average was 70%.
Governor Natembeya projected that the new hospital would be completed within five months.
He warned that any attempts by health officials to steal or mismanage drugs would not be tolerated.
He asserted that such individuals would face arrest and apprehension.
The governor encouraged residents to make use of their insurance coverage by seeking services at public hospitals, emphasizing their high-quality offerings.
He also addressed an issue where some health workers were diverting patients with insurance coverage to their private clinics.
Governor Natembeya strongly condemned this practice.
Stephen Kiptiness from Safaricom assured ongoing support for corporate social responsibility initiatives in Trans Nzoia, particularly in the domains of health, education, and the environment.
He welcomed proposals from county government departments for potential sponsorship from Safaricom.

The program, during the ground breaking exercise, supported CHPs to conduct a skit and song in health, provided name tags and CHPs reflector jackets.
During the event, various local representatives were present, including MCAs Sarah Lubano (Kwanza) and Erick Mwangale (Hospital),Margaret Kapsulel(Matumbei),Jackline Kurgat(Motosiet) and Anne Situma(nominated) as well as County secretary Truphosa Awuor and CECMs Pepela Wanjala (Health), Patrick Gacheru (Environment), Julia Kichwen (Education), and Health Chief Officer Emmanuel Wanjala, among other county officials.
