The Coconut, is a very important crop especially in the Coastal region of Kenya where it provides livelihoods to millions of people directly and indirectly.

Virtually all parts of the coconut plant are useful to man.

And the world shall tomorrow, 2nd September commemorate the World Coconut Day

It’s for this reason that Kwale Woman leader the honourable Nimusimu Mwasina has taken a moment to share with us her thoughts on this important crop.

“For us in the Coast region, the coconut is a staple crop and it’s indispensable when it comes to our cuisine. “Wali wa Nazi” just to mention an example, is a sumptuous meal of rice prepared with coconut milk. And there are countless uses of the coconut.

What I’d like to urge the county governments of Coastal region, is to work closely and see how they can transform the coconut into money in the pockets of our people

For example they can pool resources and see to it that they erect a mega coconut industrial park which can spur economy development of our region. This way, our People will benefit as well as enhance the commercial cultivation of this important crop.

The coconut tree is a multipurpose tree. It’s leafs ( makuti) are used for thatching houses roofs; the nut shell is used for making earings & serving spoons; the tree produces timber; the nut for food delicacies; coconut oil; palm wine; coconut juice ( maji ya dafu); etc

The Government ought to do something to assist in the revival of the coconut tree and promote it as a cash crop.”
