AMEK Proud To Host Mega Conference in Nairobi
This year 2023, the Association of Medical Engineering of Kenya (AMEK) Is honoured to host the First African Region Biomedical engineering and Health technology conference at safari Park, Nairobi, Kenya.
To share with us her thoughts, Eng. Millicent Alooh, HSC
Hon. Secretary General
ASSOCIATION OF MEDICAL ENGINEERING OF KENYA (AMEK) had this to say:
“The Challenges facing the profession just like other associations are many but for the sake of this conference I could mention just a few which include, Lack of adequate Training, unemployment, lack of Internship, Lack of regulation body for the profession, Poor working environment, inadequate working tools and implementation of the Medical devices policy among others.
Apart from the challenges mentioned
We request the government through your office to address the following major issues affecting medical devices management across the country;
Implementation of medical devices policy which was launched more than ayear ago
Set up better workshops for our Biomedical engineers.
We need clear guidance on equipment disposal as this are environmental hazards for us.
Co-option in various capacities internationally to support HTM development.
Last but not List employ our biomedical engineers.
The list is quite long but these are our key request
We will be engaging with your office on regular basis to have these issues addressed amicably since we are a profession that cares and would want our issues addressed different due to the unique nature of the profession.
This conference being International, it has over 20 countries represented including the President, IFMBE, Prof. Ratko (Croatia) and the African Region IFMBE president and Secretary general. Dr. Ashenafi Hussein (Ethiopia) and George Boadu (Ghana) respectively. It is also important to mention that the conference has attracted over 10 exhibitors directly and indirectly and also over 20 well researched papers that the Scientific committee recommended for this conference. We will be here for three days learning from each other in seeking the solutions inspired by our theme. this is because the conference will be highly educative, informative, with a cutting edge and timely standard presentations that is open to Biomedical engineers, Medical Equipment users, Hospital Managers, Administrators, Policy makes, Planners, Architects, Trainers, Manufacturers/agents among others who have an impact or role in the Medical equipment life cycle management and Sustainability.
Chief Guest, this conference is important because the topics to be discussed will address the many underlying professional issues in the management of Medical equipment in our healthcare facilities. This is because your Ministry as well as the County Governments has invested heavily on medical equipment which include Managed Equipment Service Project (MES) , ICU Equipment, Cold Chain equipment, Oxygen Plants, among others as well including the County Governments investments. It is my hope that the participant’s interactions will bring a platform to share individual experiences and that each person will learn on the emerging technologies in the health sector, the best practice for the pre and post covid- 19 pandemic for the benefit of the entire globe.
Chief guest, it is my commitment that after this conference we shall submit a comprehensive report of the conference to your office with possible solutions on the wayforward for implementation for your advice.
With those few remarks I thank you very much for attending this year’s conference and encouraging us to participate and engage each other objectively for the sake of improving the quality of healthcare in Africa and beyond.”
