Eldoret City Marathon Postponed
The Eldoret City Marathon has been postponed until further notice.
The marathon was scheduled for October 1st, 2023.
According to Director Moses Tanui, this is after they found themselves in an unfortunate situation.
“We regret to announce the indefinite postponement of this year’s Eldoret City Marathon. This decision has not been made lightly and I want to express our profound regret that we found ourselves in this unfortunate situation,” said Tanui while speaking to the press.
He said they have experienced delays in the arrival of running merchandise shipped in Dubai which they expected to arrive Monday morning.
“Following the Withdrawal of the County Government of Uasin Gishu as title sponsor, we scouted for new title sponsors and unfortunately there has been a delay in the completion to deposit the prize money to ensure that the race meets high standards that both our athletes and fans rightly fully expect,” added Tanui.
He says he believes the postponement is necessary to protect the interest of dedicated athletes.
“As a former athlete who understands the immense efforts that goes into training and preparation, I cannot in good conscience allow this race to proceed without the assurance that the prize money is available to honor the hard work and dedication of participants,” he said.
He says their commitment to athletes who have registered for the event remains steadfast.
“We will refund all registration fees. We recognize the sacrifices made the countless hours of training and the dreams of achieving greatness associated with such an event. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this postponement may cause,” said Tanui.
He says the decision does not mark the end of the Marathon.
“We are fully dedicated to making this a reality, but only when we have secured the necessary funds and ensured that the prize fund is deposited in our bank account. Our athletes deserve nothing but fair competition and it’s our responsibility to guarantee that,” he said.
