Regional Development Committee Concludes Public Participation on Regional Development Authorities Bill, 2023

The National Assembly Committee on Regional Development has concluded public participation regarding the proposed Bill aimed at standardizing the functions of Regional Development Authorities subject to the unique areas of operation of each authority and standardizing the membership of the Boards of each authority to 11 in line with best practices in corporate governance.

This initiative seeks to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of these institutions across the country so as to ensure seamless delivery of service to the community.

The Committee, which was split into two groups, had deliberations with members of the public in Isiolo and Elgeyo Marakwet Counties. The group in Isiolo was Led by Committee Chair, Hon. Peter Lochakapong (Sigor), while that in Elgeyo Marakwet was led by Committee Vice Chair, Hon. Mary Wamaua (Maragwa).

Participants who attended the meetings expressed their support for the positive impact that the regional development authorities have had on their respective communities. They informed the committee that these authorities have played a crucial role in addressing regional disparities, promoting economic growth, and improving livelihoods in various regions of Kenya.

One of the participants from Samburu named Legesi, shared his perspective: “Kerio Valley as one of the Authorities has been instrumental in providing essential services and opportunities in our region. Their work has addressed water scarcity, improved agriculture, and helped boost our local economy.

While addressing the public, hon. Wamaua emphasized that the bill will ensure “Mwananchi” is well served and critical gaps in service delivery are addressed.
