Luke Kiprop clocked 2:13:19 to win the second edition of Iten International Marathon, men’s category as Naomi Chepkorir won the women’s category at a time of 2:32:31.

Kiprop broke away from the leading pack in the chilly morning race but shied away from breaking last year’s record of 2:08:43 set by Samwel Naibei.

The slow pace, according to analysts was attributed to the weather conditions.
“The day was cold and foggy which makes it difficult for an athlete to breath…on a positive note, it prepares athletes to tough conditions,” said sports journalists Stephen Ruto.

Miriam Chebet, the 10KM women’s champion said although she had not expected to win, the race turned to be one of her best runs.
“I would like to thank the organisers for giving us this opportunity to show case our talent and give us an opportunity to participate in a Marathon that we only watch on TV”, she said the MonacoRun 5km champion.
Reuben Longosiwa topped the men’s 10km race.

Longosiwa crossed the finish line in 28:32 followed by Nelson Langat and Johana Erot who timed 28:44 and 28:46 respectively in the 10km clash.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba graced the event as his roads counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen led tens of fun runners on the high altitude Iten course.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, who is the patron of the Iten International was lauded for his efforts to stage the marathon that attracted more than 1200 athletes.

“This is encouraging. I am happy for the good work you are doing. Staging a marathon of such a magnitude is not easy,” said the CS who added that his department will continue supporting sports in the county.

The event was also attended by governors Benjamin Cheboi from Baringo, Nandi’s Stephen Sang and Jonathan Chelilim from Uasin Gishu and Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya boss Sarah Shibutse.

CS Namwamba who was however hard pressed to comment on the status of Kamariny Stadium did not leave the stage without good news that his ministry was rolling out a twin program that will not only address the stalled progress but will also improve Iten Sports ground.

Governor Rotich, who is the race patron thanked partners for their support and urged athletes to run clean.
“I urge our athletes to run clean. Doping has killed careers and reputation of our country. I urge you to avoid being duped unscrupulous people to used banned substance and risk your athletics career” he said.

Race director Boniface Tiren said the route was measured to international standards, by international certified route measurer and former triple Boston Marathon winner Ibrahim Hussein. “In the next coming years, Iten International Marathon will be on another level. We thank governor Rotich for his support, ” he added.
