Education Committee Turns Away Unprepared MINET Insurance Brokers Officials
The National Assembly Education Committee, chaired by Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) took a stern stance against top officials firms responsible for providing medical insurance to teachers.
The Committee turned away the CEO of MINET Insurance Brokers, Sammy Muthui and other officials after they appeared unprepared to address the concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the Kshs. 14 billion medical insurance cover they offer to teachers.
Mr Muthui, along with officials from Bliss Healthcare (K) Ltd and Medical Administrators Kenya Ltd, service providers under the insurance umbrella, faced difficulties in responding to the questions posed by the lawmakers on behalf of the teaching community.
This prompted Chairman Hon. Melly to direct that the officials reappear before the House Team on another date with comprehensive answers.
One of the key issues that the officials failed to satisfactorily address was the challenges faced by teachers in accessing treatment at select hospitals and the disparities between the medical cover issued to teachers and that provided to other clients, including Members of Parliament.
“Why should a teacher be told to return to the hospital after seven days for insurance coverage? Why are tutors still compelled to pay Kshs.100 by Bliss Healthcare when co-pay was abolished?” queried Hon. Melly during the session.
CEO Muthui admitted that the company faces challenges in administering the medical cover to teachers, attributing part of the problem to some rogue service providers and the sheer volume of their clientele.
“It’s true that there is a lot of contravention of scheme rules by the players we work with. As a company, we try to take corrective measures. Because of the sheer huge numbers of our clients, some slip-ups will always be there,” explained Mr. Muthui, who termed the situation as ‘completely unacceptable’.
However, the response did not resonate well with lawmakers, who accused the company of failing to provide value for the money paid by Kenyans for their insurance coverage.
Hon. Melly directed the officials to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, December 5, accompanied by their respective technical officers to respond comprehensively to the queries raised by committee members.
