As the ongoing heavy rains continue to pose challenges for farmers in drying their grain, the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) has taken a proactive step to alleviate this concern. Recognizing the potential for post-harvest losses due to high moisture content and the subsequent risk of aflatoxin contamination, NCPB has announced a revision to its grain drying charges, making it more accessible and affordable for farmers.

Effective immediately, farmers can utilize NCPB’s mobile grain drying services at the following subsidized rates:

Drying from 18% to 13.5%/12.5% moisture content: Ksh 70 per 90kg bag
Drying from 24% to 18% moisture content: Ksh 80 per 90kg bag

These services are available in the following depots: Ziwa, Kapsowar, Kedowa, Kapsokwony, Turbo, Mosoriot, Eldama Ravine, Bomet, and Kapenguria. Additionally, grain drying services are accessible within silos/depots with fixed dryers, including Nairobi, Nakuru, Narok, Kilgoris, Eldoret, MoisBridge, Kitale, Bungoma, and Kisumu.

By offering these subsidized services, NCPB aims to:

Minimize post-harvest losses: Ensuring proper drying prevents grain spoilage and extends its shelf life.
Prevent aflatoxin contamination: High humidity can lead to the growth of molds that produce aflatoxins, which are harmful toxins that render grain unfit for human consumption.
Support farmers: By making grain drying more affordable, NCPB helps farmers maintain the quality and value of their harvest.

Therefore, NCPB encourages wheat and maize farmers to take advantage of these competitive rates and utilize their mobile and fixed dryers. Doing so will safeguard their crops from post-harvest losses and ensure the safe consumption of their grain.

For more information and to inquire about specific locations and availability, farmers are invited to visit their nearest NCPB depot.
