Samuel Maina Leading The Charge For Sustainable Recycling and Environmental Conservation in Kenya
Meet Samuel Maina, a passionate environmentalist and member of the Ngong Juakali Association. He is the founder and Director of Havillah Smart Enviros in Ngong CIDC.
Inspired by Switzerland’s waste management model, Samuel, an Environmental Science graduate, returned to Kenya determined to make a difference. With Kenya’s population growing rapidly, he recognized the impending waste challenges and established Havillah Smart Enviros in 2017.
Havillah focuses on recovering and adding value to solid waste, contributing to a circular economy. Samuel’s initiative has directly employed 12 individuals and indirectly provided jobs for 200 waste collectors, 80% of whom are former street children turned environmental heroes.
Samuel has positively impacted approximately 2500 street children, formalizing their groups into cooperatives for financial growth.
Samuel also conducts comprehensive environmental conservation awareness campaigns in Ngong’s primary schools. He aspires to expand these initiatives throughout Kajiado County, engaging institutions in educating the community about environmental conservation.
Taking innovation further, Samuel has developed Havillah Smart Systems, a waste disposal and management app set to launch soon. The user-friendly platform aims to promote recycling culture and convenience for waste producers.
Havillah Smart Enviros plans to establish nationwide waste collection centers and employ agents as distribution channels.
Since 2017, Havillah Smart Enviros has recycled an impressive 600 tonnes of waste. Samuel’s message is “Let’s take care of the environment it’s a goldmine.”
