President Ruto Commissions Rwabura Irrigation Project Phase I
Cabinet Secretary Ministry of water, Sanitation and Irrigation Mr Zachariah Njeru EGH and Prinicipal Secretary State Department for Irrigation Mr Ephantus Kimotho CBS had today accompanied the Head of State H.E Dr William Ruto Phd in commissioning the Rwabura Irrigation Project Phase I which will serve more than 5,000 farmers and create more than 25,000 jobs.
Through the State Department for Irrigation, the government is scaling up investment in irrigation to enhance the capacity of the farmers to produce food and improve food security.
The Irrigation projects undertaken by the State Department for Irrigation and through National Irrigation Authority will help the country increase area under irrigation and cultivation and stop reliance on rain-fed agriculture.
The investment of KSh60 billion by the government in water through irrigation projects will help the country reduce the importation of food that can be produced locally.
“Every year, we spend KSh500 billion to import food produced by farmers from other countries. We want this money to go to our own farmers,” the President said.
Present were Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Governors, MPs, several MCAs, Secretary Administration, Ag Irrigation Secretary, CEO National Irrigation Authority, Heads of Department and other staff from ministry.
