Various stakeholders have called for the inclusion of mental health in the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) which is a successor of the NHIF.

Dr. Frank Njenga noted that in this time and era, the issue of mental health cannot be ignored
He made the remarks on Wednesday during the induction of 5 UON medical students at Chiromo Hospital Group whom they sponsored 4 years ago together with the co-founder of Karen Hospital Dr. Betty Gikonyo who noted:

“Today is a very special day because we the class of 1970 decided four years ago that we would like to participate in the education, of students who needed a bit of a push in terms of a financial boost, especially medical students at the University of Nairobi and we have today five medical students who are very special to us because we the class of 1970 we have sponsored part of their education, now they are in their fourth-year medical students, we are celebrating them and we believe together we can make a difference.”

On his part Dr. Frank Njenga noted,
“To avoid the situation of serikali Saidia all the time, if each and every one of us did something small, I think we would be behaving like responsible Kenyans who I believe we all are.

Any Kenyan who pretends they have not heard the loud and clear message that there’s no health without mental health is telling lies. If you’re transitioning from NHIF to SHIF and you’ve not incorporated mental health into that program, you belong to the past and you are a stranger to the future.
