My MPESA float was swept clean, and an MPESA agent explains how she got back her money from fraudsters.

Working as an MPESA agent is not for the faint-hearted ladies in the busy areas. Working as an agent for one of the Mt. Kenya tycoons in his mall was the toughest of all. The temptations from his people around and losing money through frivolous ways were very scary.

Esther Wamaitha was a nanny babysitting a business mogul’s child in Murang’a for 3 years before his boss took her to his mall in Nairobi as an MPESA attendant and caretaker.
“I was a househelp in Murang’a when my boss took me to Nairobi to be a caretaker and MPESA attendant in his mall,“ she said.

Esther Wamaitha did not believe that one day things would turn against her. In December 2023, during the festive season, she opened her MPESA as usual. This day was very different than all other days for the past five years in that business.

She talked with her boss in the morning because he was visiting the mall that day. She had saved the tycoon’s number as ‘BOSS’ on the MPESA float phone.

“I had saved my employer’s number as boss on the MPESA float phone. I saw the boss texting, saying, Please send me Sh 150,000. I texted back, OK. I sent the cash. Another message popped up saying to add Sh 100,000 and I will come later to give you cash.

“I went on and sent Sh 100,000. That was when I realised things were not the same. So I tried calling the number, but none was picking,“ she said.

The mall had very few people getting in. She knew the business of the day was actually bad. On the MPESA float phone, she received a message from a person she saved as ‘boss’ on the phone. She knew the boss was coming but wanted some cash.

She sent Sh 150,000 to the number given in the text. Later, she sent another Sh 100,000 as directed in another text message.

At noon, her employer arrived at the mall. The mogul told her to give him the phone because he wanted Sh300,000 for some shopping as he left his credit cards at home.

“At around 12.15 PM, my boss came to the mall. He asked for Sh300,000. Unknowingly, I sent Sh 250,000 to him already, and the float left was insufficient. The boss told me he did not ask for money, and that was a con game,“ she added.

“My tears already started to flow uncontrollably knowing that I have been conned with Sh 250,000. That would take me something like 6 months to 10 months to repay the whole amount. Because of the trust I had with the boss, I saw him taking his phone and calling someone, “she added.

Esther told him that he had sent him Sh 250,000 already, and the remaining balance was not sufficient. The boss was shocked because he did not text or call anyone to send him some money.

To her surprise, she was conned for Sh250,000 by scammers who pretended to be the boss. Her boss called the police, and Esther was taken to police custody, and an investigation kicked off.

“He called the police officers, who came after 5 minutes and were taken into custody. I can say that the boss also felt like he was dumping me for my recklessness. So, the following day, he ordered my release and went back to work. He said I would pay in installments.

“I called a friend, Agnes Nekesa, for help. She directed me to powerful specialists—Kiwanga doctors—who would help me get back my money,” she added.
The next day, the tycoon told the police to release her and settle the matter outside the police station. The boss told her to pay back in installments and be careful in the future. Now that Esther was not content with the happenings, she asked her friend for help.

Nekesa, Esther’s friend, told her to call Kiwanga doctors on +254769404965, who are specialists in matters of theft, bad luck, marriage problems, and business-related problems, among others. They will help her get everything back to normal.

Upon calling the specialist, they assured her of getting back all the money the scammers stole from the MPESA phone. Kiwanga doctors told her to wait for results after 48 hours. On the third day, somebody called on the same phone and explained what happened until she sent Sh 250,000 and begged for forgiveness.

The conman said he visited the MPESA shop, asked for help, and the MPESA agent gave him the phone to use. Only for the man to save another number with the name boss a day before, and she did not notice.

The conman went, saying he was experiencing abnormal heat on his body and wanted to return the money. After 10 minutes of the chat, her MPESA float money was wired back.
