Bungoma Set For Major Infrastructural Upgrade Ahead of Madaraka Day Celebrations
In a bid to enhance connectivity and spur economic growth, the Government of Kenya, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, has unveiled ambitious plans for infrastructure development in Bungoma County.
The Ministry of Roads and Transport, in collaboration with Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA), is set to construct over 600 kilometers of roads in the region. Among the key projects are the maintenance and construction of major arteries such as the Mayoni-Bungoma (Kanduyi) Road, Kapsokwony-Kaptama Road, Bungoma-Chwele Road, Webuye-Kitale Road, and Namwela-Kamukuywa Road.
Additionally, the rehabilitation of vital bridges like the Malakisi Bridge and approach roads is underway. The initiative also includes routine maintenance and spot improvement of various road sections to ensure optimal functionality.
Under the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), significant progress is being made in upgrading urban roads within Bungoma, Kimilili, and Webuye towns. Furthermore, a substantial investment of Ksh. 4 billion is allocated for the upgrade of 13.5 kilometers of roads under the annuity program, aimed at bolstering key sectors such as commerce, tourism, and agriculture.
Meanwhile, Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) is actively engaged in the construction and maintenance of 264 kilometers of roads in Bungoma County, with significant achievements already recorded.
To address congestion and enhance efficiency at border crossings, efforts are underway to improve road links leading to Lwakhakha border crossing. Additionally, upgrades to Matulo Airstrip Access Road and key river roads are scheduled ahead of the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations in June.
Moreover, modernization initiatives at weighbridge facilities in Webuye are set to streamline traffic flow and ensure compliance with weighing regulations, thereby facilitating smoother movement of goods along the highway.
This comprehensive infrastructure overhaul underscores the government’s commitment to fostering development, enhancing regional connectivity, and improving the overall quality of life for residents in Bungoma County.
