Kakamega Governor Barasa Calls for Protection of Farmers from Burdensome Taxes and Low Prices
Kakamega Governor, H.E. FCPA Fernandes Barasa, used the occasion of this morning’s Eid-Ul-Fitr celebrations at the Lugari Station Mosque to advocate for Kenyan farmers. Barasa urged Members of Parliament to amend the Finance Act, 2023, particularly provisions that mandate farmer registration on the eTims platform for tax purposes.
The Governor expressed his deep concern that the recently implemented tax regulations would cripple the agricultural sector, the lifeblood of Kakamega’s economy. He argued that these new requirements would impose an undue burden on farmers and hinder their productivity.
Barasa further criticized the Agriculture and Food Authority’s (AFA) decision to reduce cane prices. He implored the AFA to revisit their decision and raise prices to a level that ensures farmers can recoup their investments and continue to be profitable.
Deputy Governor Hon. Ayub Savula, MCAs led by Majority Whip Hon. Benard Mulama, and other county officials joined the Governor at the Eid celebrations. Barasa’s remarks highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Kenyan farmers and underscore the need for policies that support their livelihoods and encourage agricultural growth.
