The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide detectives have intensified their efforts to solve the tragic murder of 20-year-old Rita Waeni, a third-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Rita’s life was cut short in January 2024 by a cold-blooded killer, leaving her family and community in shock and mourning.

Before her untimely death, Rita resided with her aunt in Syokimau, Nairobi. On January 13, 2024, she left home at 3 p.m. and tragically never returned alive.

In their quest for justice, the DCI Homicide team has conducted extensive forensic analyses, piecing together Rita’s final moments and identifying probable suspects linked to her murder. Detailed statements from individuals of interest have been recorded, and additional data from digital platforms has been sourced to exhaust all possible leads.

Despite these efforts, the prime suspect in Rita’s murder remains at large. CCTV footage captured the individual walking Rita to the scene of her death, but his identity remains unknown. The DCI Homicide team is urging anyone who can identify the suspect from the blurry images available to come forward and provide information that may lead to his arrest.

The suspect initiated communication with Rita on October 2, 2023, through an Instagram account under the pseudonym Carlton Maina, which was later changed multiple times and eventually deactivated following the heinous crime. He is believed to have visited several hotels in Nairobi West in October 2023 and an Airbnb located in Roysambu along TRM Drive on November 7 and November 11, 2023.

Described as fluent in both Swahili and English, the suspect possesses knowledge of Nairobi and its surroundings. His evasion of CCTV cameras suggests a criminal mindset and a calculated approach to his actions.

The DCI urges anyone with information regarding the suspect’s identity or whereabouts to come forward. Information can be shared anonymously through the toll-free hotline 0800 722 203, or individuals can report to any police station or police officer. The public’s cooperation is essential in expediting justice for Rita Waeni and providing closure to her grieving family.

Conclusion:

As the investigation into Rita Waeni’s murder progresses, the DCI remains committed to bringing the perpetrator to justice. With the public’s assistance, they hope to swiftly apprehend the prime suspect and ensure that Rita’s tragic death does not go unpunished.
