CHRD Programs Officer Urges Government Action to Prevent Disaster
As the rain season looms over Uasin Gishu County, a chorus of urgent appeals echoes through its towns and villages. Advocates, led by Kipkorir Ngetich, Programs Officer of the Uasin Gishu Center for Human Rights and Democracy (CHRD), are rallying for immediate action to implement underground drainage systems.
In a press conference held earlier today, Ngetich emphasized the critical need for proactive measures to mitigate the risks posed by heavy rainfall. “We cannot afford to wait for disaster to strike before taking action,” he asserted. “Underground drainage systems are our best defense against flooding and its devastating consequences.”
Ngetich’s sentiments were echoed by community members who have witnessed firsthand the destructive power of floods. “Every rainy season brings fear and uncertainty,” remarked Jane Wanjiru, a resident of Eldoret town. “We need solutions that will protect lives and property before it’s too late.”
The appeal extends beyond mere infrastructure, touching on the need for accountability and professionalism in construction practices. “We cannot overlook the importance of ensuring that only licensed and qualified engineers and architects are entrusted with designing our roads and buildings,” Ngetich stressed. “Human errors in construction can have catastrophic consequences, especially in the face of natural disasters.”
Local authorities have acknowledged the gravity of the situation and have pledged to work closely with advocacy groups to address these concerns. County Governor, Isaac Rutto, affirmed the government’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of its citizens. “We hear the voices of our people, and we are dedicated to implementing sustainable solutions to protect our communities from the ravages of flooding,” Governor Rutto stated.
As the call for action gains momentum, all eyes turn to the government to heed the pleas of its citizens and take decisive steps to safeguard lives and livelihoods. With the rain season fast approaching, the time for action is now.
