In a bid to strengthen ties and expand its foothold in the lucrative Chinese tea market, the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) marked a significant milestone with the opening of the China Tea Trade Centre on May 15th. Led by KTDA Vice-Chairman Dr. Wesley Cheruiyot and CEO Wilson Muthaura, the event saw the convergence of high-profile dignitaries, including Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, alongside representatives from Fujian Starchina Tea Company, a prominent player in China’s tea industry.

The centerpiece of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between KTDA and Fujian Starchina, outlining a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing the production and marketing of black CTC, orthodox, and specialty teas. This collaboration signals a new era of cooperation between Kenyan tea producers and Chinese market leaders, with a shared vision of bolstering trade relations and meeting the evolving preferences of Chinese tea enthusiasts.

One of the key objectives of the MOU is to leverage Fujian Starchina’s expertise and resources to facilitate technology and equipment transfer to Kenyan tea factories. This transfer will enable the production of teas tailored specifically to the discerning tastes of the Chinese market. Through knowledge exchange and skill enhancement initiatives, Kenyan tea producers are poised to elevate the quality and variety of teas offered, thereby enhancing competitiveness and market penetration.

The establishment of the China Tea Trade Centre represents a significant milestone in Kenya’s tea export strategy, with projections indicating a target of 5 million kilos of tea exports to China within the next three years. This ambitious goal underscores the confidence and commitment of both KTDA and Fujian Starchina in the potential of the Chinese market and their determination to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

In his remarks, Dr. Wesley Cheruiyot emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable growth in the tea industry, while CEO Wilson Muthaura reiterated KTDA’s dedication to fostering mutually beneficial partnerships that create value for all stakeholders.

The opening of the China Tea Trade Centre marks a pivotal moment in Kenya’s tea industry, paving the way for enhanced cooperation, increased exports, and a brighter future for Kenyan tea on the global stage. As KTDA and Fujian Starchina embark on this transformative journey together, the stage is set for a flourishing partnership that will redefine the landscape of international tea trade.
