Transparency International Kenya Hosts Workshop on PWDs’ Access to Social Protection and Rights

Transparency International Kenya recently conducted a two-day engagement workshop in Eldoret, focusing on enhancing access to social protection programs, tax justice, and incentives for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs). The event aimed to address and reduce income and wealth inequalities among PWDs.

Hellen Tuwei, the director of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in Uasin Gishu County, emphasized the importance of PWDs registering with the NCPWD. “Registration makes it easier for the government to allocate funds as the budget is made according to the number of individuals identified. Many registered PWDs have had the privilege to get essential services like health care and education scholarships,” Tuwei stated.

Despite these benefits, the workshop highlighted significant concerns regarding the 5% reservation for PWDs in various governmental entities. Participants expressed frustration that this reservation has not been fully adhered to, with some positions meant for PWDs being acquired by individuals using their power and connections. Representatives from both national and county governments were urged to take action against these perpetrators.

Peter Meli, a participant at the workshop, voiced his concerns about the inadequate inclusion of PWDs in government opportunities. “The proposal of the addition of PWDs’ representation is a really good gesture. The only problem is that we have not been fully included as we are supposed to be. It is really sad that even the little opportunity we have, other people take it away. We are equal to the task regardless of our disabilities,” Meli said.

The workshop also stressed the necessity of setting up PWD-friendly infrastructure in public facilities. Participants called for the installation of lifts, and accessible washrooms to ensure PWDs can fully and equally participate in all aspects of life.

Furthermore, the acceptance of PWDs in society was deemed crucial for fostering inclusivity, which contributes meaningfully to collective wellbeing. Transparency International Kenya’s workshop has shed light on these critical issues, urging immediate and effective measures to support PWDs and ensure their rights and opportunities are protected and upheld.
